Urban Farms — GLT Food Factories and Mobile Edible Wall Units (MEWU)
Growing food and communities.
Growing food was a logical next step in our enterprise. It all started on a lark. “My kids wanted to grow lettuce in my Green Wall” according to Inventor George Irwin. Soon they were growing tomatoes and just about everything else (except rice and corn). From that home experiment marked a revolution in the way we approach agriculture.
Our first commercial project was in Los Angeles to help feed the homeless. We created a series of Edible Walls, and trained local residents (some jobless) to plant, nurture and harvest the walls.
The development simply led to bigger and more productive layouts utilizing parking areas, indoor facilities, abandon lots and brownfield sites and classrooms.
urban farming and green roof education….
The natural progression into education has allowed us to use the Mobile Edible Wall Unit (MEWU) as an educational tool. Used by celebrity teacher Steve Ritz (Discovery High School, Bronx NY) to improve attendance and close to 100% passing regents scores he credits the Edible Wall for engaging his students for bell to bell instruction. The MEWU is now available complete with a 90 page Unit Plan for instant instruction complete with rubrics, assessments and core cross over, designed according to the National Learning Standards the family of Green Living Technologies is also the basis for the new High School diploma (2012) being written by George Irwin in collaboration with Jamie Cloud.
