GLTI’s Aluminum Living Wall Prevails in Burn Test versus Recycled Plastic/Felt Sheet and Polypropylene
This piece was driven by the notoriety received by an article written by Hamish Champ on December 3, 2019, titled, “Combustibles ban could hit green walls, warns designer.” Rob Buck, a façade design associate at Arup, stated the latest Building Live panel on façade safety that he feared the blocking of “…green facades, since they are in effect combustible products”.
Like all of us at Green Living Technologies International, Buck is concerned that the current testing regime is limited in scope and fails to consider how a particular product is utilized. Before bans are discussed or put into place, he wants to see a risk-based evaluation of all products that are “based on sound fire engineering knowledge”.
The fact is, of all of the specifications we have reviewed, not one with the exception of GLTI lists its fire ratings. We are proud to be able to say that all of GLTI’s products are Class A Fire Rated.
Unlike our competitors’ products, which utilize Polypropylene and Recycled Plastic/Felt Sheet, GLTI’s aluminum and aluminum alloy components do not burn or contribute to combustion. In a recent burn test you can watch here, a hand held torch with an average of 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit and did not mare the GLTI aluminum Plug and Play living wall panel. Even when temperatures do increase to intense incendiary levels, aluminum will not burn in air nor will it support combustion.
When tested in accordance with ASTM or British standards, aluminum provides the highest fire ratings because it is not ignitable under atmospheric conditions and does not support flame spread. Aluminum is non-sparking in all environments and with all materials.
In any facility, but especially those with a high occupancies or higher risks of fire, you should strongly consider utilizing the Class A Fire Rated GLTI Plug and Play Living Wall and the GLTI Green Living Wall System for your interior and exterior green architectural and construction needs. These GLTI products are unable to burn, non-combustible, and retain the reflectivity at the highest tested temperatures which can theoretically slow down a fire from spreading increasing the standard fire rated code.
In addition to proving the safest products in the world, GLTI products are also designed with plant health in mind, produce zero waste water, are easy maintained, and come with a Lifetime Warranty.
