On June 19, 2010 the Services for the Underserved (SUS), Knickerbocker location (Brooklyn New York),  launched a scaled version of a Green Living Technologies (GLT) Exterior Food Factory utilizing the GLT Commercial “A” Frame Vertical Growing Systems.

The commercial units, designed for large scale food production, contain over 2300 tomato plants combined with basil (A natural insect deterrent and great complement to the tomatoes) will produce over 1.5 tons of tomatoes within a 400 square foot area.

According to CEO George Irwin, “The production numbers are  on the low side accounting for a learning curve in agriculture practices, an experienced grower can produce well over 50 lbs of tomatoes in a 4 square foot Green Living Wall Panel. In this project there is potential to produce up to three times the estimated yields once the residents grasp the practice of growing in our walls”.

This years goal is to replace the tomatoes purchased by SUS for internal use, however the word is out and already the corner store is willing to buy the tomatoes and its not out of the norm for organizations to supply the local restaurants.  For GLT this is an extension of the training programs teaching green jobs and ongoing food security.

A pioneer in “Zero Miles Farming” the system is an organic based growing media unlike hydroponics which requires highly specialized equipment and chemically enhanced water, the GLT growing system uses a natural and organic growing media, GLT bioSoil, eliminating synthetic fertilizers to feed the plants.
